Safety and recommendations for TMS use in healthy subjects and patient populations, with updates on training, ethical and regulatory issues: Expert Guidelines

Simone Rossi et al.

Summary: This article is based on a consensus conference held in Siena, Italy in October 2018, aiming to update safety guidelines for the application of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). New emerging issues discussed include safety concerns with recently developed stimulation devices, novel scenarios of TMS applications, and ethical considerations regarding neuroenhancement.

Feasibility of TMS in patients with new generation cochlear implants

Marco Mandala et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the new generation of cochlear implants is fully compatible with magnetic fields up to 2.2 T, even exceeding the current safety guidelines for pulse frequency and intensity. However, there is a risk of device corruption at higher magnetic fields of 3.2 T.

Clinical Utility of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in the Presurgical Evaluation of Motor, Speech, and Language Functions in Young Children With Refractory Epilepsy or Brain Tumor: Preliminary Evidence

Shalini Narayana et al.

Summary: This study showed that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be a safe, reliable, and effective tool to map eloquent cortices in young children with neurological diseases. Successful localization of motor, speech, and language cortices improved the understanding of the risk-benefit ratio prior to surgery and facilitated surgical planning aimed at preserving motor, speech, and language functions. Post-operatively, motor and language functions were preserved or improved in most children who underwent surgery for lesions near eloquent cortices.
