Retinal imaging in Alzheimer's and neurodegenerative diseases

Peter J. Snyder et al.

Summary: Research on retinal imaging as potential biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases has significantly increased over the past 20 years. Discussions have focused on the different modalities of retinal imaging, their strengths and weaknesses, and the importance of defining the context of use to guide the development of retinal biomarkers.

Optical coherence tomography angiography findings in Huntington's disease

Laura Giovanna Di Maio et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the retinal and choriocapillaris vascular networks and central choroidal thickness in patients with Huntington disease using OCTA and EDI SD-OCT. The findings showed no significant difference in retinal and choriocapillaris vascular density between HD patients and healthy controls, while the central choroidal thickness was thinner in HD patients compared to controls. There was also no significant relationship between OCTA findings and neurological parameters. This suggests that changes in choroidal structure may provide important insights into the neurovascular involvement in the pathophysiology of HD.

Summary: FLIO is a noninvasive imaging modality based on the Heidelberg Engineering Spectralis system, which has shown to provide additional information to conventional imaging modalities in different retinal diseases such as AMD, MacTel, and Stargardt disease. It has the potential to detect early signs of hydroxychloroquine toxicity and more benefits that are yet to be discovered.

Characterization of Retinal Microvascular and Choroidal Structural Changes in Parkinson Disease

Cason B. Robbins et al.

Summary: This study suggests that noninvasive retinal imaging parameters may serve as potential biomarkers for the diagnosis of Parkinson disease. Individuals with PD showed decreased retinal vessel and perfusion densities, increased total choroidal area, and decreased choroidal vascularity index compared to healthy control participants. Further research is needed to explore the clinical utility of these retinal biomarkers in PD.

The AppNL-G-F mouse retina is a site for preclinical Alzheimer's disease diagnosis and research

Marjan Vandenabeele et al.

Summary: The study found that soluble A beta accumulation in the retina of App(NL-G-F) mice early in life progress to A beta plaque formation by midlife, accompanied by local microglia reactivity, astrogliosis, and abnormalities in retinal vein morphology. Although signs of neuronal dysfunction were observed, no overt neurodegeneration was apparent, and visual performance outcomes remained unaffected. Hyperspectral imaging was shown to potentially serve as a biomarker for Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis and monitoring, with the App(NL-G-F) retina mirroring early preclinical stages of AD.

Advances in Retinal Oximetry

Anupam K. Garg et al.

Summary: Similar to other organs, the retina relies on tightly regulated perfusion and oxygenation, and various eye and systemic diseases have been shown to affect retinal blood flow. While peripheral oxygen saturation measurement has become a standard clinical measurement, developing a noninvasive technique to measure retinal oxygen saturation remains challenging. Current retinal oximetry technology is inadequate for reliable clinical use, but newer technologies and approaches are being developed for the future.

Differentiation between multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder using optical coherence tomography angiography

Malgorzata Rogaczewska et al.

Summary: The study utilized spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) to identify neurovascular alterations in NMOSD and MS eyes, finding differences in radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) vessel density and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness that may aid in differentiation. Using disease-specific intra-eye RPC vessel density reduction patterns, simple ratios were identified as effective discriminants between NMOSD and MS patients.

Role of Optical Coherence Tomography in Identifying Retinal Biomarkers in Frontotemporal Dementia A Review

Omar Moinuddin et al.

Summary: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is often misdiagnosed or diagnosed late due to clinical heterogeneity and overlap with other dementias. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging of the retina shows promise in identifying ocular biomarkers for FTD, which could help improve research and patient care in the future.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease has a significant impact on individuals and society as a whole, with a large number of patients in the United States and a potential for continued growth in the future. The value of unpaid caregivers has increased despite a decline in their numbers, and healthcare costs are on the rise. Racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare persist, highlighting the need for greater diversity in dementia care workforce and clinical trials.

Optical Coherence Tomography in Patients with Alzheimer's Disease: What Can It Tell Us?

Ailin Song et al.

Summary: The review found that OCT and OCTA have great potential in the diagnosis of AD, especially in comparing AD patients with healthy controls, with most studies indicating significant structural and functional decline in AD patients. While the analysis of MCI groups yielded more mixed results, a similar pattern of decline was often noted among patients with MCI compared to healthy controls.
