Role of tight junctions in the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition of cancer cells

Daisuke Kyuno et al.

Summary: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a crucial step in cancer progression, with tight junction proteins playing important roles and their upregulated expression being associated with cancer cell EMT. Future research on the regulatory mechanisms of tight junctions during EMT in cancer cells may lead to the development of biomarkers for predicting prognosis and novel therapies.

Gut vascular barrier impairment leads to intestinal bacteria dissemination and colorectal cancer metastasis to liver

Alice Bertocchi et al.

Summary: Bacteria from primary tumors can lead to bacterial dissemination from the intestine to the liver, disrupting the gut vascular barrier, boosting the formation of a premetastatic niche, and enhancing the recruitment of metastatic cells. High levels of PV-1, a marker of impaired gut vascular barrier, are associated with liver bacteria dissemination and metachronous distant metastases in colorectal cancer patients, making it a prognostic marker for distant recurrence and vascular impairment.

Bacteria break barrier to promote metastasis

Yoshitaka Murota et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that intratumoral bacteria disrupt the gut vascular barrier, leading to bacterial dissemination to the liver and the formation of a premetastatic niche, which facilitates the recruitment of metastatic cells.
