Impact of ocean heat transport on the Arctic sea-ice decline: a model study with EC-Earth3

David Docquier et al.

Summary: The recent increase in Atlantic and Pacific ocean heat transports has resulted in a decrease in Arctic sea-ice area and volume. Experiments have shown that wider areas of increased sea-surface temperature and higher warming levels lead to greater ocean heat transport increase and stronger decrease in Arctic sea-ice area and volume.

Multi-decadal trends in Antarctic sea-ice extent driven by ENSO-SAM over the last 2,000 years

Xavier Crosta et al.

Summary: Antarctic sea ice has become more extensive in the past four decades despite a warming climate. Regional climate heterogeneity in Indian Antarctic sea-ice cover over the last 2000 years is driven by multi-decadal variability of El Nino Southern Oscillation and Southern Annular Mode. Natural variability plays a crucial role in recent sea-ice trends and decadal variability in the Southern Ocean.

Observed Antarctic sea ice expansion reproduced in a climate model after correcting biases in sea ice drift velocity

Summary: Improving biases in sea ice drift velocity in climate models can lead to more accurate projections of Antarctic sea ice expansion. Models typically fail to accurately capture the observed expansion of Antarctic sea ice in recent decades.
