New methods in polymer brush synthesis: Non-vinyl-based semiflexible and rigid-rod polymer brushes

Caleb J. Reese et al.

Summary: Non-vinyl-based polymer brushes prepared via the 'grafting from' technique exhibit semi-flexible or rigid-rod structures with potential applications in organic photovoltaics, organic light emitting diodes, tribological coatings, membranes for water purification and desalination, membranes for fuel cells, high performance coatings, and biosensing. These brushes are enabled by new polymerization techniques and offer exciting opportunities for future developments.

Dual-functional hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks for aniline and ultraviolet sensitive detection

Zhijun Ke et al.

Summary: FJU-200, a novel hydrogen-bonded organic framework, has dual functions for aniline and ultraviolet detection with a low detection limit. It undergoes color changes under ultraviolet light, allowing for minute-level detection, and test papers prepared from FJU-200 enable convenient and fast detection for aniline or ultraviolet light.

A Europium-Organic Framework Sensing Material for 2-Aminoacetophenone, a Bacterial Biomarker in Water

Yifan Guo et al.

Summary: 2-Aminoacetophenone (2-AA) is a biomarker for Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) in water, but current analytical techniques for its detection are costly and time-consuming, not suitable for real-time monitoring of drinking water quality. This study demonstrated the use of Eu-MOF as a luminescent sensing material for rapid and low-cost detection of PA in water, with high sensitivity and selectivity towards 2-AA, providing a foundation for the rational design of MOF-based sensing materials.

Post-synthetic modification of porous organic cages

Hailong Wang et al.

Summary: Porous organic cages (POCs) are a class of organic materials with intrinsic porosity. Post-synthetic modification (PSM) has emerged as a highly viable strategy for broadening the functions and applications of POCs, leading to improved stability, tunable porosity, and selective guest binding. This approach allows for the realization of intricate structures and unique gas adsorption selectivity that cannot be achieved through traditional predesign methods.

Confinement-guided photophysics in MOFs, COFs, and cages

Gabrielle A. Leith et al.

Summary: This review carefully evaluates the dependence of the photophysical response of chromophores in confined environments associated with crystalline scaffolds, and discusses the tunability of framework aperture, cavity microenvironment, and scaffold topology on confined chromophores. The methods for integrating chromophores into frameworks and the potential of chromophore-integrated frameworks in various applications are also highlighted throughout the review.
