Air pollution in the Gobi Desert region: Analysis of dust-storm events

Mikalai Filonchyk et al.

Summary: Air pollutants in nine cities of the Gobi Desert region were examined, with the highest concentrations found in spring and winter. During dust storm activity, an increase in coarse aerosol fractions impacted the atmosphere and surface temperatures.

Coupling relationship between construction land expansion and PM2.5 in China

Liang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the relationship between urban air pollution with PM2.5 as the main pollutant and construction land expansion in China, revealing a rapid increase followed by a continuous decline in PM2.5-polluted area growth rate from 2000-2010. The spatial coupling coordination between construction land and PM2.5 concentration has strengthened in Central, West, and East China.

Detection of a Dust Storm in 2020 by a Multi-Observation Platform over the Northwest China

Lili Yang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that during a severe dust storm event, the ratio of PM2.5/PM10 was less than 0.2, with extinction coefficients greater than 1 km(-1) based on Lidar observations. Additionally, PM2.5 showed higher growth rates than PM10. Dust particles mainly concentrated at heights of 2 km, increasing in vertical height by 1-2 km after being transported about 200-300 km, with a marked decrease in concentration.

Tracking prevailing dust aerosol over the air pollution in central China with integrated satellite and ground observations

Minghui Tao et al.

Summary: Based on integrated satellite and ground observations, this study provides a comprehensive insight into the sources, transport process, and potential influence of prevalent dust particles in central China during October 2020. The research reveals that dust sources are active during fall, with thick dust layers being carried by predominant northwestern winds to northern China and even the Sichuan Basin. The slow dust-pollution mixing process in central China can last for as long as 3-4 days due to temperature inversion, highlighting the importance of paying attention to these unnoticeable but frequent dust plumes in regional atmospheric environment and climate effects.

Cities are going uphill: Slope gradient analysis of urban expansion and its driving factors in China

Liang Zhou et al.

Summary: The study reveals the evolution of vertical urban expansion in China from 1990 to 2015 using multi-period land cover and slope data. The phenomenon of climbing on slopes has become increasingly apparent over time, with the number of cities developing built-up land on high slopes increasing. The intensity of slope climbing spatially increased from north to south and showed a low-high-low pattern from west to east.

Airborne Particulate Matter Pollution in Akure Metro City, Southwestern Nigeria, West Africa: Attribution and Meteorological Influence

Akinola S. Akinwumiju et al.

Summary: The study investigated the origin, seasonal air quality indices, and fate of particulate matters in Akure, Nigeria. The research found significant differences in PM concentrations across seasons, with air quality mainly influenced by environmental and meteorological conditions. The study suggests implementing enforced environmental management involving green and blue economies to combat atmospheric pollution in Akure for sustainable development.
