Low chlorine impurity might be beneficial in chlorine dioxide disinfection

Jiarui Han et al.

Summary: Chlorine impurity in chlorine dioxide solution impacts disinfection efficiency and DBPs formation. Studies showed that 5% chlorine impurity generated the lowest level of organic halogenated DBPs, while higher developmental toxicity was induced with higher chlorine impurity.

Interactions of fluoroquinolone antibiotics with sodium hypochlorite in bromide-containing synthetic water: Reaction kinetics and transformation pathways

Zihan Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the reaction kinetics and transformation of seven popular fluoroquinolone antibiotics in synthetic marine aquaculture water during sodium hypochlorite disinfection scenario. Different FQs exhibited varied reactivity to NaClO and were influenced by the coexistence of chlorine ions, sulfate ions, and humic acid. Bromide ions were found to promote or inhibit the degradation of certain FQs, and new brominated disinfection byproducts were identified through LC-MS/MS analysis. Density functional theory calculation was used to clarify the transformation mechanisms of FQs, including decarboxylation, ring-opening/closure, dealkylation, and halogenation processes. Additionally, the bioaccumulation potential of the transformation products in aquatic organisms was analyzed.

Characteristics and transformation pathways of venlafaxine degradation during disinfection processes using free chlorine and chlorine dioxide

Juan Lv et al.

Summary: The study found that venlafaxine can be efficiently removed during disinfection processes, especially when reacted with ClO2. Higher dosage of disinfectant and mildly alkaline conditions enhance degradation of venlafaxine. However, the reactions are impacted by real water matrices, with the presence of chloride and low concentrations of fulvic acid promoting the decomposition process.
