KOH-activated high surface area Douglas Fir biochar for adsorbing aqueous Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II)

Amali Herath et al.

Summary: Through KOH activation, high surface area Douglas fir biochar obtained from commercial syn-gas production shows remarkable enhancement in heavy metal adsorption capacity for Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II). The adsorption process follows pseudo-second order kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption model for all three metals. The desorption study reveals that Pb(II) adsorption onto KOH-activated biochar surface is reversible, while portions of Cd(II) and Cr(VI) adsorbed strongly onto the biochar cannot be desorbed by typical solutions.
