Enhanced power generation from algal biomass using multi-anode membrane-less sediment microbial fuel cell

Banu Taskan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the electricity generation capacity of mixed-culture algae biomass using a multi-anode sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC), achieving a high-power density of 2965 mW/m(2) with a tin-coated copper mesh (TCCM) anode and platinum-coated titanium mesh cathode. Microscopic observations and gene profiling analysis confirmed the biocompatibility of TCCM facilitates bacterial adhesion and enrichment of electroactive bacterial groups. The findings suggest that algae biomass can significantly improve electricity generation in SMFC.

Continuous biohydrogen production from poplar biomass hydrolysate by a defined bacterial mixture immobilized on lignocellulosic materials under non-sterile conditions

Sanjay K. S. Patel et al.

Summary: This study focused on continuous production of H-2 from poplar biomass using a immobilized state mixed culture under non-sterile conditions. The results showed a steady H-2 yield over a period of 40 days, which was significantly higher compared to traditional single bacterial cultures. This approach has the potential to meet the increasing demand for cleaner energy-rich fuels in a sustainable manner.

Regulation of Plant Mineral Nutrition by Signal Molecules

Vipin Chandra Kalia et al.

Summary: Quorum sensing (QS) activities operate at high cell densities through specific chemical signals, with acylhomoserine lactones being the most widely reported in Gram-negative bacteria. A novel QS-like system involving strigolactones has been elucidated for communication between microbes and plants, regulating important bioprocesses that influence the health of plants, animals, and humans. This mini-review discusses recent developments in QS and QS-like signal molecules in promoting plant health.

The presence of low fouling-causing bacteria can lead to decreased membrane fouling potentials of mixed cultures

Naga Raju Maddela et al.

Summary: The presence of low fouling-causing bacteria in a dual-species culture can significantly reduce the membrane fouling potential of high fouling-causing bacteria through interspecies interactions. Fourier transform infrared analyses show that low fouling-causing bacteria can modulate the extracellular polymeric substances functional groups of high/low fouling-causing bacteria mixed cultures, thereby alleviating membrane fouling. Isolation and application of low fouling-causing bacteria in membrane bioreactors can be a promising method for membrane fouling control through specific cell-to-cell interactions.

Effect of the tetracycline antibiotics on performance and microbial community of microbial fuel cell

Seyho Topcu et al.

Summary: The adverse effects of tetracycline antibiotics on microbial activity pose a serious risk to the biologic wastewater treatment process. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) offer a promising technology for wastewater treatment and renewable power generation, making it essential to investigate the inhibitory effects of tetracyclines on MFCs. The study found that increasing antibiotic concentrations significantly impacted MFC performance and microbial communities.
