Self-forming dynamic membrane bioreactor for textile industry wastewater treatment

Adem Yurtsever et al.

Summary: The study investigated the robustness of AnDMBR for synthetic textile wastewater treatment, finding that in the absence of sulfate addition, the removal rate of total COD and filtered COD was 91% and 93% respectively, but decreased to 79% after sulfate addition. The suspended solids concentration in textile wastewater was low, while the dye removal rate was high.

Influence of photobioreactor set-up on the survival of microalgae inoculum

Alessia Bani et al.

Summary: Cultivating specific microalgae in an industrial setting is challenging due to contamination and economic cost considerations. Understanding the ecology of microalgae cultivation is necessary for stable production. Results show that a closed photobioreactor configuration is essential for maintaining a specific microalgae inoculum, while other systems develop a different eukaryotic community due to contamination and higher fitness of contaminants.

Membrane fouling in a microalgal-bacterial membrane photobioreactor: Effects of P-availability controlled by N:P ratio

Meijia Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that P-availability can potentially affect biomass properties and membrane fouling in a Microalgal-bacterial membrane photobioreactor. A lower N:P ratio under nitrogen sufficient conditions resulted in more severe membrane fouling, primarily attributed to cake layer formation. Optimizing the ratio of microalgae/bacteria consortium by adjusting operating conditions is crucial for controlling membrane fouling in MB-MPBRs.

Inhibition of AHL-mediated quorum sensing to control biofilm thickness in microbial fuel cell by using Rhodococcus sp. BH4

Banu Taskan et al.

Summary: The research utilized a novel quorum quenching strategy to control the biofilm thickness on the anode surface in microbial fuel cells (MFCs), achieving significant improvements in power generation performance. Inhibiting signal molecules in the anode chamber reduced extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) production and optimized MFC electricity generation. The addition of Rhodococcus sp.BH4 beads in the MFC resulted in decreased biofilm thickness and dead bacteria abundance, indicating the effectiveness of the QQ strategy for enhancing MFC performance.

Evaluation and comparison of the microbial consortia enriched by gamma-caprolactone and N-Acyl homoserine lactones for effective quorum sensing disruption

Boyan Xu et al.

Summary: This study proposed and compared three novel quorum quenching consortia (QQC) composed of abundant quorum quenching (QQ) candidates including bacteria and fungi for effective quorum sensing disruption. The results showed that QQC exhibited higher substrate specificities towards AHLs, ensuring sustainable QQ performance, and the different microbial community assemblages within QQC were the main determinants for diverse QQ performance. These findings have implications for sustainable QQ bioaugmentation and biostimulation applications in membrane bioreactors (MBRs).

A review on membrane fouling control in anaerobic membrane bioreactors by adding performance enhancers

Weonjung Sohn et al.

Summary: Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) combine anaerobic digestion with membrane technology, offering advantages such as biogas production and potential energy use. However, membrane fouling is a persistent issue that can be mitigated by using fouling reduction enhancers like adsorbents and flocculants. Activated carbon and other enhancers have been applied to AnMBRs to control fouling and promote flocculation and coagulation. This review discusses the impacts and mechanisms of different fouling reduction enhancers in AnMBRs.

Effects of solids retention time on the biological performance of a novel microalgal-bacterial membrane photobioreactor for industrial wastewater treatment

Meijia Zhang et al.

Summary: The microalgal-bacterial membrane photobioreactor (MB-MPBR) has shown promising potential in treating industrial anaerobic digestion effluent by simultaneously removing organics and nutrients, with the results showing that different solids retention times (SRT) can impact the growth of microalgae and removal of nutrients. Proper operation techniques are essential to achieve high-quality effluent.
