Polyhexamethylene Guanidine Phosphate Induces Apoptosis through Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Lung Epithelial Cells

Mi Ho Jeong et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that PHMG-p is rapidly located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and induces ER stress in A549 cells and mice. The ER stress inhibitor tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) was used as a pre-treatment to confirm the role of ER stress in PHMG-p-induced cytotoxicity. The findings suggest that PHMG-p causes ER-stress-mediated apoptosis, which is an initial step in PHMG-p-induced lung fibrosis.

A humidifier disinfectant biocide, polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate, inhalation exposure during pregnancy induced toxicities in rats

Jinsoo Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicities of PHMG-P inhalation exposure in pregnant rats and the prenatal development of their conceptus. The results showed systemic toxicities in pregnant rats and prenatal development toxicities, indicating the potential risks of PHMG-P inhalation during pregnancy.

Causal relationship between humidifier disinfectant exposure and Th17-mediated airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness

Mi-Kyung Song et al.

Summary: The study found that repeated exposure to low doses of PHMG-P induces asthma-like symptoms, possibly through modulation of the Th17 signaling pathway rather than the Th2 pathway. The asthmatic airway inflammation induced by PHMG-P showed a distinct pattern from typical allergic asthma, characterized by Th2-low, Th17-related, IgE-independent, and mixed granulocytic features.
