Land application of municipal sewage sludge: Human health risk assessment of heavy metals

Elif Yakamercan et al.

Summary: Land application of municipal sewage sludge has become a popular option worldwide, but the heavy metals in the sludge pose potential ecological and human health risks. This study assessed the risks of heavy metals in sewage sludge samples from different cities in Turkey, finding that children may face higher health risks compared to adults due to exposure to Pb, As, and Cr. These findings suggest that regulatory limits alone may not be enough to protect all individuals from health risks associated with municipal sewage sludge.

Effect of pyrolysis temperature on removal of organic pollutants present in anaerobically stabilized sewage sludge

Jaroslav Mosko et al.

Summary: The study focused on using slow pyrolysis to treat organic pollutants in stabilized sewage sludge, finding that temperatures above 600 degrees Celsius effectively removed the majority of organic pollutants. It was proposed that high temperature (>600 degrees Celsius) slow pyrolysis can satisfactorily remove organic pollutants from resulting sludge-char, making it a safe soil improver.

Effect of hydrothermal pretreatment on pyrolyzed sludge biochars for tetracycline adsorption

Weisheng Chen et al.

Summary: The research compared the adsorption performance of two biochars derived from activated sludge in the treatment of tetracycline, finding that hydrothermal pretreatment can enhance the specific surface area and pore volume, leading to increased adsorption capacity. The spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process involves multi-layer adsorption and chemical adsorption, with mechanisms including pore filling, electrostatic force, hydrogen bond, and pi-pi interaction. The higher adsorption capacity of one biochar is attributed to more adsorption sites provided by its specific surface area and pore volume, with pi-pi interaction playing a major role.

New use for biochar derived from bovine manure for tetracycline removal

Summary: The study investigated the physicochemical properties of bovine manure biochar obtained at different temperatures and their adsorption of tetracycline. The results showed that both BC-500 and BC-700 had high TC removal rates, with different maximum adsorption capacities, and were well described by pseudo-second order kinetics. Even after multiple cycles, the biochar still maintained satisfactory removal efficiencies, mainly through hydrophobic interactions and pi-pi electron donor acceptor interactions.
