It Takes Three to Tango: The Length of the Oligothiophene Chain Determines the Nature of the Long-Lived Excited State and the Resulting Photocytotoxicity of a Ruthenium(II) Photodrug

Avinash Chettri et al.

Summary: The study of TLD1433, the first Ru(II) complex tested as a photodynamic therapy agent in a clinical trial, reveals that increasing oligothiophene chain length changes its photophysical properties, especially impacting the generation of O-1(2) and its potential as a photocytotoxic agent, with the addition of a third thiophene playing a critical role.

Spiro Rhodamine-Perylene Compact Electron Donor-Acceptor Dyads: Conformation Restriction, Charge Separation, and Spin-Orbit Charge Transfer Intersystem Crossing

Mengyu Hu et al.

Summary: Electron donor-acceptor dyads Rho-Pery were prepared to study the spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing in these rigid and sterically congested molecular systems. The fluorescence of the dyads is significantly quenched in polar solvents, and the singlet oxygen quantum yields are strongly dependent on solvent polarity. Femtosecond transient absorption spectra show rapid charge separation and slow charge recombination, while nanosecond transient absorption spectra reveal the formation of triplet states via SOCT-ISC with distorted p-framework resulting in shorter triplet lifetime. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirms the SOCT-ISC mechanism.

Summary: The study investigates the excited state dynamics of fac-[Re(NBI-phen)(CO)(3)(L)] (PF6) and its general models, [Re(phen)(CO)(3)(L)](PF6) (L = PPh3 and CH3CN), using transient absorption and time-gated photoluminescence spectroscopy. The molecules containing NBI-phen exhibit enhanced visible light absorption and rapid formation of triplet ligand-centered excited state, enabling them to engage in triplet-triplet annihilation photochemistry effectively.
