Bisindole [3]arenes-Indolyl Macrocyclic Arenes Having Significant Iodine Capture Capacity

Xingke Yu et al.

Summary: Novel macrocyclic arene compounds, called bisindole [3]arenes (BID[3]s), composed of six indole subunits, were synthesized using a one-pot condensation reaction. The macrocyclic structures were confirmed by X-ray studies and were found to have high iodine adsorption ability and significant morphology changes upon iodine adsorption and desorption.

Pagoda[5]arene with Large and Rigid Cavity for the Formation of 1:2 Host-Guest Complexes and Acid/Base-Responsive Crystalline Vapochromic Properties

Xiao-Ni Han et al.

Summary: Pagoda[5]arene (P5), composed of five 2,6-dimethoxylanthracene (2,6-DMA) subunits, was synthesized conveniently and showed a symmetrical pentagonal structure with a large and deep electron-rich cavity. It demonstrated stable 1:2 host-guest complexes with various aryl-pyridinium, bipyridinium, and stilbazolium salts in solution. The complexes formed by P5 and protonated pyridinium or bipyridinium salts exhibited acid/base-responsive color changes and remarkable crystalline vapochromic properties.

A Green Fluorescent Nitrogen-Doped Aromatic Belt Containing a [6]Cycloparaphenylene Skeleton

Fan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of a nitrogen-doped aromatic belt with a [6]cycloparaphenylene skeleton, showing rigid conjugated structure and deep cavity, as well as strong green fluorescence. The belt-shaped conjugated structure composed of three carbazole subunits has specific optoelectronic properties that will promote wide applications in supramolecular chemistry and materials science.

Towards the Highly Efficient Synthesis and Selective Methylation of C(sp3)-Bridged [6]Cycloparaphenylenes from Fluoren[3]arenes

Xu-Sheng Du et al.

Summary: An efficient method for the synthesis of C(sp3)-bridged [6]cycloparaphenylenes (C[6]CPPs) from fluoren[3]arenes (F[3]As) has been developed, resulting in the synthesis of a new type of macrocyclic arenes. C[6]CPPs exhibit rigid belt-shaped structures and can be selectively methylated to produce fully outer-methyl-substituted derivatives. This research also obtained an unclosed belt with narrow energy gaps and strong fluorescence property, offering potential for the design and synthesis of new aromatic belts.

Saucer[n]arenes: Synthesis, Structure, Complexation, and Guest-Induced Circularly Polarized Luminescence Property

Jing Li et al.

Summary: In this study, saucer[n]arenes were synthesized through one-pot condensation and showed strong fluorescence properties as well as forming complexes with ammonium salts. Chiral quaternary ammonium salts were able to induce chirality in the inherently chiral saucer[n]arenes, leading to mirror-imaged circular dichroism signals and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties.

Chirality Transfer in a Calixarene-Based Directional Pseudorotaxane Complex

Gerardo Concilio et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the formation of a directional pseudorotaxane complex between Hexamethoxycalix[6]arene and a chiral axle, with a preference for one stereoisomer. DFT calculations reveal the stereoselectivity of the threading process, and an amplification of optical rotation is observed in the pseudorotaxane complex.Calculations were used to rationalize the increase in specific rotation observed in the mixture of chiral salt and achiral compound upon formation of the pseudorotaxane.

A mechanically self-locked gemini-[1]rotaxane-assembled microsphere and its properties on l-Arg controlled reversible morphology and fluorescence changes

Yun-Fei Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel gemini-[1]rotaxane molecule DEP5, based on pillar[5]arene, was designed and synthesized. It serves as a chemosensor for selectively recognizing l-Arg with high sensitivity, and can transform its microsphere morphology into cross-linked supramolecular networks through host-guest interactions with l-Arg, which can be reversed by the addition of competitive reagent guest trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). This work offers a new and simple approach to construct smart materials based on gemini-[1]rotaxane that can achieve reversible regulation of morphology by external chemical stimuli.
