Bright and Robust Phosphorescence Achieved by Non-Covalent Clipping

Zijian Li et al.

Summary: A non-covalent clipping strategy is utilized to encapsulate Pt-II-based triplet emitters in a tweezer receptor, achieving the goal of reducing susceptibility to the surrounding environment and displaying robust phosphorescence. The phosphorescent colors can be intricately modulated by varying ligand substitutes, and circularly polarized phosphorescence is further enhanced for chiral Pt-II emitters. Overall, the clipping approach paves the way for the development of high-performance phosphorescent materials with bright emission and easy color tunability.

Using the Mechanical Bond to Tune the Performance of a Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitter**

Pachaiyappan Rajamalli et al.

Summary: This study characterizes rotaxanes based on a carbazole-benzophenone thermally activated delayed fluorescence luminophore, demonstrating that the mechanical bond can lead to an improvement in key photophysical properties of the emitter. Computational simulations and X-ray crystallography suggest that weak interactions enforced by the mechanical bond between the axle and macrocycle result in the tuning of properties. The use of mechanical bonds to refine existing luminophores provides a new avenue for emitter optimization, ultimately increasing the performance of these molecules.

Confinement fluorescence effect (CFE): Lighting up life by enhancing the absorbed photon energy utilization efficiency of fluorophores

Bin Fang et al.

Summary: The efficiency of small molecule fluorophores in utilizing photon energy can be enhanced through conformational changes without destruction or aggregation. The confinement fluorescence effect (CFE) is a useful strategy for bio-sensing/imaging probes. Although many scientists have utilized this property, the concept of CFE has not been systematically summarized.

Drum-like Metallacages with Size-Dependent Fluorescence: Exploring the Photophysics of Tetraphenylethylene under Locked Conformations

Zhewen Guo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of conformational restriction on the photophysical behaviors of AIE materials with TPE units, demonstrating redshifted fluorescence and decreased quantum yield with increasing size of metallacages. The control of conformation holds promise for understanding the AIE mechanism and optimizing the photophysical behaviors of materials in supramolecular coordination complexes.

Summary: A new class of D-A type fluorophore (TPQL dyes) with slight emission redshift and high brightness has been designed for high-fidelity imaging. These fluorophores provide bright and unbiased fluorescent images in cells, deeper tissue penetration, and greater signal-to-background ratios in tissues. Additionally, they have been successfully employed to monitor the dynamic changes of H2S and APN during zebrafish liver development.

A General Method to Improve Fluorophores Using Deuterated Auxochromes

Jonathan B. Grimm et al.

Summary: The advancement of bioimaging relies on chemical strategies to improve the brightness and photostability of fluorophores. By incorporating deuterium into small-molecule fluorophores, fluorescence quantum yield can be increased, photochemically induced spectral shifts can be inhibited, and irreparable photobleaching can be slowed down, resulting in next-generation labels with improved performance in cellular imaging experiments.
