In situ functionalization of graphene

Kyrylo Greben et al.

Summary: Defects in the basal plane of graphene are chemically active centers that can be controlled for functionalization with foreign molecules. A novel approach is reported to generate, monitor, and functionalize these defects in situ without exposure to ambient conditions. Experiments show that defects generated by argon plasma can be functionalized in situ, inducing n-doping in graphene with stable carrier density under ambient conditions.

Near-Unity Molecular Doping Efficiency in Monolayer MoS2

Milad Yarali et al.

Summary: Surface functionalization with organic electron donors (OEDs) is an effective doping strategy for 2D materials, achieving doping levels beyond conventional methods. Using monolayer MoS2 as a model system and DMAP-OED as a strong dopant, this study demonstrates doping efficiencies in the range of 0.63 to 1.26 electrons per molecule, with DMAP-OED being a stronger dopant than previous best OED dopant benzyl viologen. The measured doping efficiency range is in good agreement with values predicted from first-principles calculations, providing a basis for rational design of OEDs for high-level doping of 2D materials.
