A facile solution phase synthesis of directly ordering monodisperse FePt nanoparticles

Yongsheng Yu et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple approach to synthesize monodisperse ordered L1(0)-FePt NPs with average size 10.7 nm without further annealing or doping the third metal atoms. The use of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) is key in inducing the thermodynamic growth of Fe and Pt atoms into the ordered intermetallic structure. The synthesized 10.7 nm L1(0)-FePt NPs exhibit a coercivity of 3.15 kOe and saturation magnetization of 45 emu/g at room temperature, showing the potential for solution phase synthesis of ordered Pt-based intermetallic NPs.

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles as T1 Contrast Agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Fundamentals, Challenges, Applications, and Prospectives

Mike Jeon et al.

Summary: Gadolinium-based chelates are commonly used contrast agents for MRI, but their toxicity and potential retention in patients' bodies have raised safety concerns. Iron oxide nanoparticles have emerged as a promising alternative due to their non-toxic and biodegradable nature, but their development as T-1 contrast agents is complex and challenging. Progress is being made in exploring IONPs as safe and improved alternatives, but there are still many hurdles to overcome before they can be used clinically.

Structurally ordered PtFe intermetallic nanocatalysts toward efficient electrocatalysis of methanol oxidation

Yao Nie et al.

Summary: By using thermal interdiffusions under a removable NaCl cover, pure Pt nanoparticles can be easily converted into size-controlled PtFe ordered intermetallic nanoparticles, while disordered nanoparticles can be obtained by adjusting the feeding contents of Fe precursors. The ordered PtFe catalyst shows higher activity, stability and anti-CO poisoning capability compared to disordered PtFe and commercial Pt/C, due to the stronger strain, ligand, and synergistic effect between Pt and Fe.

Summary: Magnetic heating using magnetic nanoparticles excited with a high-frequency magnetic field has been utilized for biological applications and catalyzing chemical reactions at high temperatures. Understanding the temperature dependence of heating power of MNPs up to high temperatures is crucial for exploiting their properties fully. A setup for measuring these properties on solid state samples up to 550 degrees C is described, with the potential to reach up to 900 degrees C. This setup is valuable for characterizing MNPs for catalysis applications and generating data for predicting the temperature dependence of MNP heating power.
