Changing chemistry of particulate manganese in the near- and far-field hydrothermal plumes from 15 °S East Pacific Rise and its influence on metal scavenging

Jong-Mi Lee et al.

Summary: Dissolved Mn(II) in hydrothermal plumes is oxidized to form Mn(III/IV) oxides, which scavenge other trace elements in seawater. Studies on the GEOTRACES GP16 cruise show that Mn is transported over long distances, with differences in removal rates and size distribution of Mn particles between near-field and far-field plumes. The characteristics of Mn particles vary between the two plumes, affecting their ability to scavenge other trace elements.

Differential manganese and iron recycling and transport in continental margin sediments of the Northern Gulf of Mexico

Shannon M. Owings et al.

Summary: This study used a reactive transport model to analyze the role of manganese and iron in carbon remineralization in sediment around the Mississippi River mouth. The differential kinetics of manganese and iron redox transformations were found to influence carbon remineralization processes on the continental slope.

Phosphorus burial in vivianite-type minerals in methane-rich coastal sediments

L. Joelle Kubeneck et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that vivianite-type minerals may play a significant role in the sink for phosphorus in eutrophic coastal sediments, particularly in areas with an excess of iron. Analysis comparing the dynamics of iron and sulfur indicates that vivianite-type minerals occur at low and intermediate salinity sites, potentially influenced by the availability of metal cations.

Coastal hypoxia and eutrophication as key controls on benthic release and water column dynamics of iron and manganese

Wytze K. Lenstra et al.

Summary: The study found that in seasonally hypoxic areas of the Baltic Sea receiving high inputs of organic matter, there are high rates of benthic release of iron and manganese, which are sensitive to bottom water oxygen concentrations. Easily reducible iron and manganese oxides are key forms of particulate iron and manganese in suspended matter.
