High Organic Burial Efficiency Is Required to Explain Mass Balance in Earth's Early Carbon Cycle

Michael A. Kipp et al.

Summary: Earth's carbon cycle maintains a stable climate and biosphere on geological timescales. The question of whether carbon cycled more quickly or slowly through the surface reservoir on early Earth has important implications for climate state and biosphere size. High organic burial efficiency in the Precambrian may have enabled substantial carbon burial despite limited biological productivity, with greater outgassing of reductants likely needed to maintain atmospheric anoxia prior to the Great Oxidation Event.

Photochemical modelling of atmospheric oxygen levels confirms two stable states

Bethan S. Gregory et al.

Summary: Various proxies and numerical models have been used to constrain O-2 levels over geological time, but considerable uncertainty remains. Previous investigations using 1-D photochemical models have predicted how O-3 concentrations vary with assumed ground-level O-2 concentrations, and indicate how the ozone layer might have developed over Earth history. Our results suggest that stable equilibrium solutions exist for trace- and high-O-2/O-3 cases, separated by a region of instability.

A 200-million-year delay in permanent atmospheric oxygenation

Simon W. Poulton et al.

Summary: The rise of atmospheric oxygen had a significant impact on the chemistry of surficial environments and Earth's habitability. Research indicates that atmospheric oxygen levels continued to fluctuate around 2.32 billion years ago, correlating with major perturbations in ocean redox chemistry and climate. Ultimately, permanent atmospheric oxygenation was achieved around 2.22 billion years ago, about 100 million years later than previously estimated.
