Isotope evidence for multiple sources of B and Cl in Middle Miocene (Badenian) evaporites, Carpathian Mountains

Yao Zhao et al.

Summary: In the Middle Miocene Badenian evaporites, both B and Cl isotopes show multiple sources of brine, including evaporite brine, dissolved diapiric halite, and basin brine, in addition to seawater. The data suggest significant contributions from terrestrial boron and non-marine chloride to the composition of basin brine. Further variations in the isotopic values indicate influences from sorption onto clay and recrystallized, diapiric halite.

Boron coordination and B/Si ordering controls over equilibrium boron isotope fractionation among minerals, melts, and fluids

Yin-Chuan Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes models for the BO3 and BO4 units in silicate melts and investigates boron isotope fractionation among silicate melt, minerals, and fluids. It finds that the proportion of trigonal/tetrahedral coordinated boron and B/Si ordering in silicate tetrahedral layers determine boron isotope fractionation among different phases, with temperature also playing a role. The study supports the use of white mica-tourmaline geothermometers and boron isotopes for fluid source identification, providing insight into boron isotope fractionation in systems containing complex silicate melts.

Chlorine isotope data of chlorides challenge the pore fluid paradigm

Agrinier Pierre et al.

Summary: Overall, the chlorine isotope fractionation in pore fluid may be controlled by specific fluid-specific processes rather than water-rock exchange reactions. Compaction-induced ion filtration through clay-rich membranes could potentially explain the observed depletion in pore fluid delta Cl-37, with different clay minerals associated with different isotopic fractionation factors. Further experimental work is needed to better understand the role of ion-filtration in fractionating isotopic species in sediment pore waters.

Chlorine isotope mantle heterogeneity: Constraints from theoretical first-principles calculations

Xi Liu et al.

Summary: This study provides theoretical estimates of equilibrium chlorine isotope fractionation among common chlorine-bearing minerals, and explains the heterogeneity of ?37Cl in the Earth's mantle. The results show that the isotopic fractionation is strongly correlated with the metal-Cl bond length of minerals, and the ?37Cl values of mantle minerals could vary between -6‰ and +3‰. This heterogeneity is likely due to large-scale recycling of volatile Cl from the deep mantle and isotopic fractionation during subduction.
