A practical approach for modelling the growth of microalgae with population balance equation

Ergys Pahija et al.

Summary: Modelling microalgae dynamics in a photobioreactor is an inexpensive way to determine cell concentration over time, with the potential to improve production processes by retrieving relevant biological information. In this study, a model was developed to determine microalgal dynamics under varying environmental conditions and evaluate the time needed for a full life-cycle, using laboratory-based procedures and mathematical modelling.

Modeling the Transport of Aggregating Nanoparticles in Porous Media

Vasileios E. Katzourakis et al.

Summary: A novel mathematical model was developed to describe the transport of nanoparticles in water-saturated, homogeneous porous media with uniform flow, taking into account their migration, aggregation, and attachment to solid matrices. The model simulations showed significant differences in nanoparticle transport compared to conventional biocolloids, with aggregation impacting attachment and breakthrough differently based on particle size. Useful conclusions were drawn regarding the implications of neglecting aggregation, particle-size dependent dispersivity, and nanoparticle surface charges on results.

Impact of the Heterogeneity in Free Chlorine, UV254, and Ozone Susceptibilities Among Coxsackievirus B5 on the Prediction of the Overall Inactivation Efficiency

Shotaro Torii et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the variability in susceptibilities to free chlorine, UV254, and ozone among 13 variants of coxsackievirus B5 (CVBS) and develop a predictive model. The findings showed significant differences in susceptibility to disinfectants among different genogroups of CVBS, suggesting the need to incorporate this heterogeneity for accurate predictions.

A review of the impact of environmental factors on the fate and transport of coronaviruses in aqueous environments

Diplina Paul et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has resulted in a significant number of global deaths. The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets but can also be found in the fecal matter of infected individuals. Various environmental factors such as temperature, UV exposure, organic matter, disinfectants, and competing microorganisms impact the persistence of the virus in water. Research has shown that temperature, organic matter, chlorine, membrane bioreactors, and ultraviolet irradiation all play a role in virus inactivation in aqueous environments. Further studies are needed to fully understand the disinfection kinetics of coronaviruses in water systems.

A Comparison of Porphyrin Photosensitizers in Photodynamic Inactivation of RNA and DNA Bacteriophages

Joe Heffron et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy of functionalized porphyrin compounds for photodynamic inactivation of bacteriophages as human virus surrogates. PdT4 and PdC14 metalloporphyrins were found to be more effective in virus inactivation compared to TMPyP, with a 2.5-fold increase in inactivation of resistant virus phi X174.

Virus Isoelectric Point Estimation: Theories and Methods

Joe Heffron et al.

Summary: The fate of viruses is heavily influenced by electrostatic interactions, and accurately predicting the virion isoelectric point (pI) can help understand and anticipate virus transport. However, current methods based on capsid charges often deviate from empirically measured pIs. Excluding predictable polynucleotide-binding regions (PBRs) provides a more accurate prediction of virus pI, outperforming methods based on 3D structure.
