Encapsulation of highly viscous CO2 capture solvents for enhanced capture kinetics: Modeling investigation of mass transfer mechanisms

Thomas Moore et al.

Summary: The encapsulation of highly viscous liquid-like Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials (NOHMs) inside a gas permeable polymer to form SIPs significantly enhanced the CO2 capture kinetics. The diffusion-controlled model was used to simulate CO2 uptake within the hybrid materials, showing that the increase in gas flux was a consequence of the very large CO2 permeability within the polymer-solvent composite.

Relationship between tertiary amine's physical property and biphasic solvent's CO2 absorption performance: Quantum calculation and experimental demonstration

Yanan Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the physical properties of tertiary amines and the phase separation behavior and absorption rate of biphasic solvents through quantum calculation and experimental results. The high electronegativity of the tertiary amine N atom leads to a fast phase separation rate and absorption rate, while increasing the polarity of the N atom can stabilize absorption rate. Overall, this relationship could enhance the understanding for screening and practical application of biphasic solvents.

Dynamic Activation of Adsorbed Intermediates via Axial Traction for the Promoted Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Xinyue Wang et al.

Summary: An axial traction strategy was developed to optimize the electronic structure of the M-N-4 moiety, leading to atomically dispersed nickel sites coordinated with four nitrogen atoms and one axial oxygen atom embedded within the carbon matrix (Ni-N-4-O/C). This Ni-N-4-O/C electrocatalyst exhibited excellent CO2RR performance with a high CO Faradic efficiency close to 100% at -0.9 V, maintaining the CO FE above 90% in a wide potential window. The superior CO2RR activity is attributed to the axial traction effect induced by the Ni-N-4-O active moiety.

Protic guanidine isothiocyanate plus acetamide deep eutectic solvents with low viscosity for efficient NH3 capture and NH3/CO2 separation

Dongshun Deng et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are considered as the second generation ionic liquids with potential applications in gas capture and separation, due to their negligible vapor pressure and abundant formation variation. In this study, DESs with low viscosity were constructed using protic guanidine isothiocyanate and acetamide. The gas solubility was enhanced with increasing molar ratio, pressure, and decreasing temperature, while the solubilities of NH3 and CO2 were correlated by Henry's law. The DESs showed efficient NH3 absorption and selective separation performance.

Asymmetry in the climate-carbon cycle response to positive and negative CO2 emissions

Kirsten Zickfeld et al.

Summary: The study reveals that negative CO2 emissions do not have a symmetric response compared to positive CO2 emissions. Emitting CO2 into the atmosphere is more effective at raising atmospheric CO2 levels than removing an equivalent amount of CO2 is at lowering it, indicating a complex climate outcome from avoiding or offsetting CO2 emissions with negative emissions.
