Nano-engineering of Ru-based hierarchical porous nanoreactors for highly efficient pH-universal overall water splitting

Cheng-Bin Hong et al.

Summary: A facile methodology was reported for fabricating hierarchical porous nanostructures riveted with ultrafine Ru nanoclusters, serving as high-performance nanoreactors for overall water splitting. The nanoreactors exhibited remarkable performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) across a wide pH range, with an alkaline HER overpotential of only 25 mV@10 mA cm(-2) and an ultrahigh turnover frequency (TOF) value. Additionally, the nanoreactors showed prominent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and were used to construct a two-electrode device for efficient overall water splitting with high H-2 generation rates in varied pH media.

Understanding the doping effect on hydrogen evolution activity of transition-metal phosphides: Modeled with Ni2P

Laifei Xiong et al.

Summary: Investigating the correlation between changes in electronic structure and catalytic activity in electrocatalysts is crucial for design and synthesis. Using Ni2P as a model catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction, the study systematically investigates the impact of doping heteroatoms on electrochemical performance. Results show that Badar charge increment and d-band center on the surface of doped Ni2P catalyst have a significant linear correlation with hydrogen adsorption energy. Additionally, experimental validation confirms that Fe and Co-doped Ni2P exhibits the best catalytic activity, with XPS and electrochemical tests supporting the theoretical analysis.

O doping hierarchical NiCoP/Ni2P hybrid with modulated electron density for efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Yan Wen et al.

Summary: This study successfully designed an O-incorporated hierarchical NiCoP/Ni2P hybrid electrode, which overcame the additional cost caused by heteroatom doping and exhibited excellent catalytic performance in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction. Oxygen doping optimized the free energy of reactions and accelerated the hydrogen evolution process, while the strong coupling of O-NiCoP/Ni2P improved electron transfer efficiency.

Charge induced crystal distortion and morphology remodeling: Formation of Mn-CoP nanowire @ Mn-CoOOH nanosheet electrocatalyst with rich edge dislocation defects

Xiumin Li et al.

Summary: Abundant edge dislocations were successfully generated on Mn-doped CoP material, leading to the formation of P vacancies and lattice distortion, which improved the catalytic performance. Additionally, the surface of Mn-CoP was in-situ converted to Mn-CoOOH with a nanosheet structure, forming a core-shell structure and enhancing catalytic activity for OER. The defect-activated Mn-CoP @ Mn-CoOOH electrocatalyst exhibited low overpotentials for both HER and OER with high stability.
