Activation of peroxymonosulfate by single-atom Fe-g-C3N4 catalysts for high efficiency degradation of tetracycline via nonradical pathways: Role of high-valent iron-oxo species and Fe-Nx sites

Xiaoming Peng et al.

Summary: A Fenton-like catalyst was prepared using isolated Fe single-atom and Fe clusters anchored onto a g-C3N4 framework for the heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade tetracycline (TC). The single Fe atoms served as active sites with optimal binding energy for PMS activation, leading to the production of high-valent iron-oxo species and single oxygen-dominated nonradical processes causing TC degradation. This study demonstrates the superior catalytic activity of single Fe atoms compared to Fe clusters in the activation of PMS for TC degradation.

N-coordinated Co containing porous carbon as catalyst with improved dispersity and stability to activate peroxymonosulfate for degradation of organic pollutants

Hongchao Li et al.

Summary: The study presents a carbonaceous catalyst with N-coordinated Co (Co-NG) prepared using a mixture of Co phthalocyanine and melamine as precursor for PMS activation. The catalyst shows high catalytic activity and stability for the degradation of various organic pollutants, with sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-) identified as the main reactive species. Reactions parameters including solution pH, inorganic anions, and natural organic matters were also evaluated, providing insights for designing efficient Co-based carbonaceous catalysts with high Co stability for water treatment applications.

Anchoring CuFe2O4 nanoparticles into N-doped carbon nanosheets for peroxymonosulfate activation: Built-in electric field dominated radical and non-radical process

Zheng-Tao Dong et al.

Summary: In this study, CuFe2O4 nanoparticles anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets were prepared to investigate the electron transfer for radical and non-radical pathway activation. The results indicate that a built-in electric field (BIEF) plays a crucial role in adjusting the electron transfer. Under the dominance of BIEF, the CFONC-2/PMS system showed excellent removal performance of levofloxacin (LVFX), suggesting a promising strategy for designing metallic oxides-carbon catalyst with strong electric field effect in PMS catalytic reaction.

Enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation on dual active sites of N vacancy modified g-C3N4 under visible-light assistance and its selective removal of organic pollutants

Guanlong Wang et al.

Summary: Constructing a metal-free material for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation under photocatalytic assistance is a promising strategy for water decontamination. The N vacancy modified g-C3N4 nanotube (VCN) showed enhanced PMS activation towards organic pollutants removal under visible light, with O-2(center dot-) and center dot OH as major oxidants. The unique electronic structure created by N vacancy promoted PMS activation on VCN PPAS, leading to selective removal of different organic pollutants.

Effect of inorganic anions on the performance of advanced oxidation processes for degradation of organic contaminants

Jianlong Wang et al.

Summary: Inorganic anions such as chloride, carbonate, phosphate, sulfate, and nitrate have a significant impact on the performance of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). This influence is not solely attributed to their quenching effect, but also affects reactive species, oxidant stability, catalyst activity, and degradation products. Understanding the comprehensive evaluation of the effect of inorganic anions on AOPs is crucial for optimizing the treatment of organic pollutants.

Different degradation mechanisms of carbamazepine and diclofenac by single-atom Barium embedded g-C3N4: the role of photosensitation-like mechanism

Jialiang Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that single-atom Barium (Ba) embedded g-C3N4 enhances the photocatalytic activity for carbamazepine (CBZ) and diclofenac (DCF) degradation by different mechanisms. CBZ degrades through a typical photocatalysis mechanism, while DCF degrades via a photosensitization-like process. Due to the different degradation mechanisms, the effects of pH, co-existed anions, and water matrix are also different. The photosensitization-like mechanism of DCF shows higher anti-interference capacity in real water as it does not rely on photo-generated holes mediated oxidation.
