Near-infrared light triggered photodynamic and nitric oxide synergistic antibacterial nanocomposite membrane

Jing Sun et al.

Summary: A nitric oxide-assisted PDT nanocomposite membrane was developed for significantly enhanced bactericidal performances under a single near-infrared light irradiation. The generated nitric oxide exhibited a larger sterilization area compared to reactive oxygen species, demonstrating a vital complementary advantage in facilitating PDT antibacterial efficacy as proven in in vitro and in vivo tests. This type of nanocomposite membrane may have unique biomedical applications where both highly enhanced PDT antibacterial effects and deep penetration of NIR light are desired.

Light-Triggered Nitric Oxide Release by a Photosensitizer to Combat Bacterial Biofilm Infections

Zhennan Zhao et al.

Summary: A novel ruthenium-based compound with dual functionality as a boronic acid-decorated photosensitizer and light-triggered nitric oxide releasing agent is reported in this study. The compound can selectively attach to bacterial membranes and biofilms, effectively eradicating Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms through simultaneous release of NO and ROS. It shows higher efficacy than the clinical antibiotic tobramycin, with excellent bacterial specificity and no significant cytotoxicity to human cells, suggesting potential applications in combatting bacterial biofilm infections.

Photothermy-strengthened photocatalytic activity of polydopamine-modified metal-organic frameworks for rapid therapy of bacteria-infected wounds

Donglin Han et al.

Summary: In this study, a metal-organic framework (MOF) was modified using polydopamine (PDA) to develop MOFPDA as a photoresponsive bacteria-killing agent under 660 nm light irradiation. The modification with PDA not only increased heat production, but also enhanced the production of O-1(2), resulting in improved photocatalytic performance. The enhanced hyperthermia induced by PDA modification accelerated charge transfer, strengthening the photocatalytic performance of MOF-PDA.

Chlorin e6 (Ce6)-loaded supramolecular polypeptide micelles with enhanced photodynamic therapy effect against Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Qiang Gao et al.

Summary: Gram-negative bacterial infection is still a global health threat due to lack of effective drugs. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has shown potential in treating these infections, but has limitations and needs to be combined with targeting technology. This study developed a novel PDT drug delivery system with bacteria-targeting ability, high disinfection efficacy, and low toxicity to mammalian cells, showing promising results in treating infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria.
