Adsorption of metals from oil sands process water (OSPW) under natural pH by sludge-based Biochar/Chitosan composite

Junying Song et al.

Summary: In this study, a sludge-based biochar/chitosan composite was successfully prepared and showed excellent removal efficiency for metals (Cr, Cu, Se and Pb) in oil sands process water (OSPW). The enhanced removal ability of the composite was attributed to its improved specific surface area, pore volume, and functional groups such as NH2, -OH and oxygen containing groups. The adsorption process was best described by the Freundlich model, pseudo second order, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models, indicating that chemical adsorption played a dominant role in the removal process.

Interactive assessment of lignite and bamboo-biochar for geochemical speciation, modulation and uptake of Cu and other heavy metals in the copper mine tailing

Mehr Ahmed Mujtaba Munir et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combined effect of bamboo-biochar and water-washed lignite on the concentration of metals in pore water, their bioavailability, and geochemical speciation at copper mine tailings sites. The results show a significant reduction in Cu concentration and increased Pb and Zn concentration after amendments application. Co-application of BC-LGT effectively reduces the bioavailability of Cu and other metals.
