Engineering Atomically Dispersed FeN4 Active Sites for CO2 Electroreduction

Nadia Mohd Adli et al.

Summary: Atomically dispersed FeN4 active sites show exceptional catalytic activity for electrochemical CO2 reduction to CO. Controlling particle size and Fe doping is crucial for optimizing the extrinsic catalytic properties of FeN4 sites, while intrinsic activity can be tuned by varying thermal activation temperatures during FeN4 site formation. Structural evolution of Fe-N bonds plays a key role in understanding the origin of intrinsic activity improvement.

Xuning Li et al.

Summary: Atomically dispersed single-atom catalysts, such as Fe-N-C catalysts, have shown exceptional activity in the CO2 reduction reaction. Operando Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopic studies revealed that LS FeIN4, featuring monovalent iron, is the reactive center for the conversion of CO2 to CO. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that strong orbital interactions between Fe(I) and COOH fragment play a key role in the excellent CRR performance.
