Fe atoms anchored on defective nitrogen doped hollow carbon spheres as efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction

Panpan Su et al.

Summary: A pair of electrocatalysts, Fe-N/C and Fe-ND/C, were designed and synthesized through direct pyrolysis of hollow carbon spheres adsorbed with Fe(acac)(3). Comparative experiments showed that Fe-ND/C exhibits superior ORR activity compared to Fe-N/C, potentially due to the enhancement effect of Fe-ND sites on ORR activity. The Fe-ND/C electrocatalysts with proposed coordination structure of FeN4-x (0<4) anchored by OH as axial ligand weaken the strong binding of OH* intermediate and promote the desorption of OH* as the rate-determining step for ORR in alkaline electrolyte, resulting in much better ORR activity compared with Fe-N/C.

Flexible carbon nanofiber film with diatomic Fe-Co sites for efficient oxygen reduction and evolution reactions in wearable zinc-air batteries

Yiyan Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed a highly efficient strategy for preparing large-area flexible CNF films with excellent bifunctional catalytic performance, achieved optimal electronic properties for ORR and OER through abundant FeN3-CoN3 sites. The resulting ZAB not only has high specific power and cycling stability, but also the excellent mechanical properties of Fe1Co1-CNF make it suitable for manufacturing portable ZAB with deformability and stability.

The philosophy of carbon: meso-entropy materials

Boxu Feng et al.

Summary: Carbon materials have been widely studied and developed in the past decades, with popular types including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene. However, the relationships between these materials and their chemistry are still not entirely clear. This article introduces the meso-entropy concept as a new method to re-evaluate carbon materials and predict new carbon-rich materials with novel properties.
