Modified graphene oxide anode: A bioinspired waste material for bioremediation of Pb2+ with energy generation through microbial fuel cells

Asim Ali Yaqoob et al.

Summary: This study utilized oil palm biomass waste-derived graphene derivatives as a novel anode material in MFCs and further improved the efficiency of MFCs by fabricating composite anodes to treat Pb2+ wastewater. The results demonstrate that the composite anode exhibited higher efficiency, power density, and current density compared to the single L-GO anode.

How Comparable are Microbial Electrochemical Systems around the Globe? An Electrochemical and Microbiological Cross-Laboratory Study

Carlo Santoro et al.

Summary: A cross-laboratory study on microbial fuel cells focused on assessing the development of autochthone microbial pools enriched from domestic wastewater. Despite the diversity of bacterial communities, all MFCs reached similar maximum power outputs and COD removal efficiencies. The study suggests that the performance of MFCs is influenced by electrolytic conductivity, electrode overpotentials, and an unbalanced external resistance, with enriched microbial consortia playing a key role in similar electrochemical outputs.

Effect of silver incorporated sulphonated poly ether ether ketone membranes on microbial fuel cell performance and microbial community analysis

Vaidhegi Kugarajah et al.

Summary: This study introduced silver as an effective additive in SPEEK membrane to reduce membrane biofouling in MFC. The incorporation of silver ions reduced biofilm formation, leading to the highest maximum power density from SPEEK + 7.5% Ag membrane after three months of MFC operation. Microbial community analysis identified microbes contributing to electron transfer.

Application of proton-conducting sulfonated polysulfone incorporated MIL-100(Fe) composite materials for polymer-electrolyte membrane microbial fuel cells

Bita Roshanravan et al.

Summary: This research evaluated a microbial fuel cell (MFC) device equipped with a novel composite polymer-electrolyte membrane for simultaneous treatment of meat poultry wastewater and power generation. The results showed that the SPSU/MIL7 composite membrane performed better in the MFC, achieving higher voltage, power density, and COD removal rate, suitable for application in proton exchange membrane MFCs (PEMMFCs).
