Mixed oxidation of aqueous nonylphenol and triclosan by thermally activated persulfate: Reaction kinetics and formation of co-oligomerization products

Yumeng Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mixed elimination of aqueous nonylphenol (NP) and triclosan (TCS) in a thermally activated persulfate system. It was found that the presence of TCS enhanced the conversion of NP, while NP hindered the degradation of TCS. A total of 23 intermediates were identified, with the dominant route being a single-electron coupling reaction induced by (OH)-O-center dot. These findings provide useful information for the elimination of mixed endocrine disrupting chemicals in water and wastewater.

Facile synthesis of solar light-driven Z-scheme Ag2CO3/TNS-001 photocatalyst for the effective degradation of naproxen: Mechanisms and degradation pathways

Yuliang Wu et al.

Summary: The development of an efficient Z-scheme Ag2CO3/TNS-001 nanocomposite photocatalyst has shown superior photocatalytic activity for the removal of naproxen under solar light irradiation. The synergistic effects of highly active (001) facets, efficient solar light response, and enhanced separation of photogenerated carriers contribute to the remarkably improved photocatalytic efficiency. The proposed Z-scheme mechanism was confirmed through scavenging experiments and further analyses, providing new insights into the elimination of emerging organic pollutants.

Catalytic oxidation of naproxen in cobalt spinel ferrite decorated Ti3C2Tx MXene activated persulfate system: Mechanisms and pathways

Aqsa Fayyaz et al.

Summary: Naproxen (NPX) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can have detrimental effects on human and ecosystem health at certain concentrations in aqueous environments. A nanocatalyst composed of MXene nanosheets and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles was successfully fabricated for the degradation of NPX, with high removal efficiency achieved. Radical and nonradical pathways were found to be involved in the catalytic degradation process, indicating the promising potential of CoFe2O4@MXene/PS system for treating water polluted with NPX.

Benzophenone-3 degradation via UV/H2O2 and UV/persulfate reactions

Young-Min Lee et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the UV/PS reaction is more efficient in degrading BP3 in water compared to the UV/H2O2 reaction, with degradation efficiency increasing with higher dosage of H2O2 and persulfate. BP3 degradation primarily occurs at pH 6 and is influenced by water components such as HCO3-, NO3-, Cl-, Br- ions, as well as humic acid.

Formation of nitrogenous disinfection byproducts in MP UV-based water treatments of natural organic matters: The role of nitrate

Xiao Liu et al.

Summary: The presence of nitrate was found to impact the degradation of NOMs during UV water treatment processes. Nitrate accelerated NOM degradation in MP UV treatment but inhibited it in MP UV/H2O2 treatment. Furthermore, the presence of nitrate led to the formation of nitrate-derived N-DBPs, which induced genotoxicity during the treatments.

Formation of nitro(so) and chlorinated products and toxicity alteration during the UV/monochloramine treatment of phenol

Chunyan Chen et al.

Summary: The UV/NH2Cl process is effective in removing organic contaminants in water treatment, but it can also produce toxic nitro(so) and chlorinated products that significantly increase cytotoxicity. The toxicity is primarily attributed to 4-nitrosophenol, and UV/NH2Cl treatment greatly enhances the toxicity.
