Diverse Uses of the Reaction of Frustrated Lewis Pair (FLP) with Hydrogen

Douglas W. Stephan

Summary: This Perspective discusses the new directions and developments in FLP chemistry involving hydrogen, including new applications and approaches to FLP reductions, reductions of small molecules, and advances in heterogeneous FLP systems. Despite having its roots in main group chemistry, the concept of FLPs is being applied across disciplines.

Relay Catalysis by Achiral Borane and Chiral Phosphoric Acid in the Metal-Free Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Chromones

Jingjing Chen et al.

Summary: A strategy of relay catalysis using achiral borane and chiral phosphoric acid was developed successfully for the asymmetric hydrogenation of chromones, yielding desired products in high yields with up to 95% enantiomeric excess. The achiral borane acts as a Lewis acid in the first-step hydrogenation, while the chiral phosphoric acid serves as an effective chiral proton shuttle to control enantioselectivity.

A Direct Organocatalytic Enantioselective Route to Functionalized trans-Diels-Alder Products Having the Norcarane Scaffold

Casper L. Barlose et al.

Summary: An enantioselective methodology for constructing trans-Diels-Alder scaffolds with up to five contiguous stereocenters is presented, utilizing a halogen effect and a novel discovered pseudo-halogen effect. The reaction involves an endo-selective, secondary-amine catalyzed Diels-Alder reaction followed by a subsequent S(N)2-like reaction at a tertiary center to obtain the trans-Diels-Alder scaffold. The mechanism was supported by experimental results and computational studies.

Assembly of fluorinated chromanones via enantioselective tandem reaction

Mengxue Lu et al.

Summary: The enantioselective synthesis of fluorinated tricyclic chromanones with multiple vicinal stereogenic centers has been achieved for the first time through a tandem reaction. The study provides a wide range of fluorinated tricyclic chromanones with excellent outcomes, and a plausible catalytic cycle and transition state are also provided to rationalize the observed sense of asymmetric induction.
