Influence of high pressure on the structure, hardness and brittle-to-ductile transition of NbSi2 ceramics

D. L. Pu et al.

Summary: This study applies first-principles calculations to investigate the impact of pressure on the properties of NbSi2. It is found that increasing pressure results in higher hardness and elastic modulus of NbSi2, as well as induces a transition from brittleness to ductility in different phases. The enhancement of mechanical properties is attributed to the increased electronic hybridization between Nb and Si under pressure, demonstrated by chemical bonding interactions.

First-principles calculations on the adhesion strength, fracture mechanism, interfacial bonding of the semi-coherent Al(111)/Al3BC(0001) interfaces

Mingjun Peng et al.

Summary: The study systematically explored the atomic structure, adhesion work, interfacial energy, and fracture mechanism of the semi-coherent Al(111)/Al3BC(0001) interface using first-principles calculations. It was found that the B-terminated Al(111)/Al3BC(0001) interface in HCP2 configuration exhibits the highest adhesion work and lowest interfacial energy, indicating its stability. The formation of strong Al-B covalent bonds at the interface ultimately leads to mechanical failure in the Al slab at the B-HCP2 interface.

A first-principles investigation of interfacial properties and electronic structure of SiO2/Al interface

Wenlong Zhang et al.

Summary: The structural, adhesive and electronic properties of a SiO2/Al interface were investigated via first-principles calculations. The most stable SiO2 (0001) surface was terminated with two oxygen atoms, and the most stable SiO2/Al interface was at the hollow site with the smallest interfacial energy and largest work of adhesion. Electronic structure investigations showed polar covalent bonding at the SiO2/Al interface, attributed to the interaction between s and p orbitals of O atoms and p orbitals of Al atoms. The study provides valuable data for the design and multi-scale simulations of oxidized-SiC reinforced aluminum matrix composites.

Effects of Cr2O3 Content on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al2O3 Matrix Composites

Kunkun Cui et al.

Summary: Al2O3-Cr2O3 refractories are solid solutions that can resist slag erosion effectively. The introduction of Cr2O3 in the composite material leads to decreased compactness and mechanical properties, as well as reduced thermal shock resistance. A Cr2O3 content of 20-30% in the composite refractory can meet the requirements for smelting reduction iron making kiln lining.

Insight into the Mechanical Properties and Fracture Behavior of Pt3Al Coating by Experiment and Theoretical Simulation

Yong Pan

Summary: The polycrystalline Pt3Al coating prepared by the arc-melting method exhibits lamellar cleavage fracture with a measured fracture strength of 449.5 MPa. The theoretical investigation and MD simulation show that the cleavage fracture of Pt3Al is attributed to atomic cluster and thermal activation, respectively. This indicates a close correlation between experimental and theoretical results in understanding the fracture mechanism of Pt3Al.

Evolution of surface morphology, roughness and texture of tungsten disilicide coatings on tungsten substrate

Yingyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The hot dip silicon-plating method is a promising surface coating technology, but the correlation between process parameters and properties of WSi2 coatings is not entirely clear. SEM, TEM, AFM, and EBSD methods were used to study the evolution behavior of surface and interface morphologies, roughness, and texture of tungsten disilicide coatings. The results showed that the surface morphologies and roughness were influenced by deposition time, and the orientation of WSi2 grains was biased towards (100) and (110) crystal planes due to the vigorous bombardment of high-energy Si ions.

Summary: In this study, the structural stability, elastic and thermodynamic properties of MoAl5 were investigated using first-principles calculations. It was found that the hexagonal phase of MoAl5 exhibits superior mechanical properties compared to the cubic phase, attributed to the strong localized hybridization between Mo and Al. The high temperature thermodynamic properties of MoAl5 were related to the vibration of Al atom and Al-Mo bond, as indicated by density of state and chemical bonding analysis.
