Morphologies evolution and mechanical behaviors of SiC nanowires reinforced C/(PyC-SiC)n multilayered matrix composites

Xinfa Tian et al.

Summary: SiC nanowires reinforced C/(PyC-SiC)(n) multilayered matrix composites (SM-CS) were prepared using a combination of sol-gel and chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) methods. The multilayered structure, with an outer PyC layer designed to reduce gas supersaturation, allowed for the in-situ formation of tubular SiC nanowires on the surface. The increase in maximum force of SM-CS composites with the number of preparation cycles was attributed to the multiscale reinforcing system of the (PyC-SiC)(n) multilayered structure and SiC nanowires.

CVD synthesis of nanometer SiC coating on diamond particles

Xutong Zheng et al.

Summary: Continuous and dense nanometer SiC coatings were deposited on large and small diamond particles using CVD to improve the wettability of diamond and enhance its oxidation resistance. The SiC-coated diamond particles showed increased onset oxidation temperatures and improved compressive fracture strength compared to raw diamond particles. CVD method shows promise for preparing homogenous nanometer SiC coatings on diamond particles for further application in composites.

Abnormal grain growth in iron-containing SiC fibers

Yanwen Li et al.

Summary: Iron-rich particles play a crucial role in the rapid grain growth of SiC fibers during sintering by facilitating coherent attachment of grains and using neighboring irregular-shaped nanograins as building blocks. This growth mechanism introduces structural heterogeneities, including the formation of low angle grain boundaries and porosities.

Tailored macro-pores during the formation of C/C-SiC via liquid phase pyrolysis

Stefan Flauder et al.

Summary: Synthesizing C/C-SiC via liquid silicon infiltration with thermoplastic carbon precursors can result in macro-pores in the C/C state, which can be controlled and utilized as a new level in microstructure for ceramic matrix composites. These macro-pores are primarily induced by the non-linear elastic recovery of the fiber preform, rather than gas formation and release during pyrolysis. The pore shapes can be tailored by process control, varying from isolated spherical pores to an interconnected tube-like macro-pore network.

Preparation and mechanical behaviors of multiscale SiC nanowires/carbon fiber reinforced silicon oxycarbide ceramic composites

Junjie Qian et al.

Summary: 3D-carbon fiber felts reinforced ceramic-based composites have excellent high-temperature mechanical performance, low density, and low thermal conductivity. By in-situ growing SiC nanowires on the surface of carbon fiber, the compressive strength of the composite was significantly enhanced by the brittle fracture of SiC nanowires and carbon fibers, as well as crack deflection.
