Advances in ultra-high temperature ceramics, composites, and coatings

Dewei Ni et al.

Summary: Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) have ultra-high melting points, outstanding mechanical properties, and ablation resistance at elevated temperatures, making them promising materials for structural applications in extreme environments such as rockets and hypersonic vehicles. The development of high-entropy UHTCs is an emerging direction for ultra-high temperature materials.

Long-term oxidation behavior of C/SiC-SiBCN composites in wet oxygen environment

Xin'gang Luan et al.

Summary: Introducing polymer derived SiBCN ceramic into carbon fiber reinforced SiC composites creates C/SiC-SiBCN composites with favorable wet oxygen oxidation resistance. The oxidation behavior of C/SiC-SiBCN composites is influenced by temperature and the release speed of gas products, and the oxidation mechanism is further explained by comparing with C/SiC-SiBCN composites.

An electrically conductive SiBCN film prepared via polymer-derived ceramic and chemical vapor deposition methods

Xingang Luan et al.

Summary: The demand for high-temperature surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors with multi-parameter simultaneous measurement capabilities is highlighted, especially in aerospace and energy fields. Conductive films comprised of SiBCN ceramics coated via different methods were investigated for their compatibility with YCa4O(BO3)(3) (YCOB) single crystal at 1200 degrees C. The study showed promising results in obtaining high temperature conductive films through the PDC plus CVD route, with the overall conductivity change primarily attributed to increased graphitization degree of free carbon in PDC-SiBCN.

Polymer-Derived Lightweight SiBCN Ceramic Nanofibers with High Microwave Absorption Performance

Qingqing Chen et al.

Summary: Lightweight SiBCN ceramic nanofibers with tunable electromagnetic wave absorption were prepared by electrostatic spinning and high-temperature annealing techniques. The defect-free nanofibers, composed of an amorphous matrix, beta-SiC, and free carbon nanocrystals, exhibited good microwave absorption properties after annealing at 1600 degrees C. The optimized microstructure endowed the SiBCN ceramic nanofibers with potential applications as lightweight and ultrastrong radar wave absorbers in military and commercial markets.
