3D imaging techniques for characterising microcracks in cement-based materials

M. J. Mac et al.

Summary: Concrete inherently contains pores and microcracks that can adversely impact its mechanical properties and long-term durability. This study evaluated different 3D imaging techniques for characterizing microcracks induced by various mechanisms in cement pastes, mortars, and concretes. The research found that there is no single technique that can capture the entire size range of microcracks, and compared the achievable image volume, resolution, advantages, and disadvantages of each technique.

Analysis of autogenous shrinkage-induced microcracks in concrete from 3D images

M. J. Mac et al.

Summary: A new image analysis procedure was introduced to quantify microcracks in concrete, showing that supplementary cementitious materials and curing age have significant effects on microcracks. Slag and silica fume were found to increase the volume and characteristics of microcracks. Comparing 3D and 2D measurements helped determine the representative elementary volume for properties of microcracks and air voids in concrete.
