Multifunctional behavior of composite beams incorporating hybridized carbon-based materials under cyclic loadings

Oguzhan Ozturk et al.

Summary: The study investigated the cyclic self-sensing behavior of reinforced composite beams produced with a hybridized form of carbon fiber and carbon black. The experimental findings showed that only beams coupled with hybrid carbon-based materials were able to repetitively self-sense damages between 30% and 70% of the total applied load, with carbon-based materials making a slight contribution to the engineering properties of the beams.

Multifunctional cementitious composites with integrated self-sensing and hydrophobic capacities toward smart structural health monitoring

Wenkui Dong et al.

Summary: Multifunctional cementitious composites with integrated self-sensing and hydrophobicity capacities were developed and investigated using conductive graphene nanoplate (GNP) and silicone hydrophobic powder (SHP). The highest compressive and flexural strengths were achieved with 1% SHP and 2% GNP, while water absorption decreased significantly with SHP content. The water contact angle initially increased and then decreased with the dosages of GNP and SHP.

Summary: This study developed novel self-sensing cement-based sensors using CNTs-coated waste glass particles, which showed significant effects of waste glass content on workability, water impermeability, mechanical properties, electrical resistivity, and microstructure. The uniformly distributed CNTs on the surfaces of waste glass particles formed conductive passages in the cement matrix.
