Rheological and pumping behaviour of 3D printable cementitious materials with varying aggregate content

Manu K. Mohan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the rheological behavior of 3D printable cementitious materials with different aggregate-to-binder ratios, analyzing the pumping and printing characteristics based on measured rheological parameters. The study found that increasing the ratio of aggregate-to-binder resulted in significant changes in plastic viscosity, yield stress, and storage modulus, providing insights into the behavior of high yield stress fluids during pumping and printing processes.

Mechanical properties of 3D printed concrete in hot temperatures

Aktham S. Alchaar et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the mechanical properties of 3D printed fiber-reinforced concrete mix in different environmental conditions, revealing that high temperature accelerated water evaporation and surface dehydration, and joints in printed parts are detrimental to performance. Flexural strength increased in hot temperatures, indicating good fiber orientation during the printing process.

Early age hydration, rheology and pumping characteristics of CSA cement-based 3D printable concrete

Manu K. Mohan et al.

Summary: Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement is a promising low-CO2 binder system that could potentially replace Portland cement in various applications. This study investigated the feasibility of using CSA cement for 3D printable concrete, and identified rapid hydration and high plastic viscosity as critical challenges. It was found that the use of borax and gluconate as retarders can improve the open time of CSA cement mixtures, but may affect early age compressive strength development.

3D printing eco-friendly concrete containing under-utilised and waste solids as aggregates

Gang Bai et al.

Summary: 3D concrete printing technology provides an opportunity for utilising underutilised and waste solids as aggregates. The experimental study in this article shows that the self-supporting skeletal effect formed by gradated particles can improve the construction performance of mixtures and reduce the shrinkage of the cement matrix. These findings provide feasible solutions for promoting the eco-utilisation of underutilised and waste solids in 3D printing while meeting strength and durability requirements.

Development of 3D Printable Cementitious Composites with the Incorporation of Polypropylene Fibers

Jolien Van der Putten et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the influence of different polypropylene fiber lengths and dosages on the workability, pore structure, mechanical, and shrinkage behavior of 3D printable cementitious materials. The findings show that a higher fiber volume decreases workability and increases flexural strength, with M6 fibers being more effective. In addition, the addition of fibers results in a marginal increase in total porosity and a reduction in total free shrinkage, particularly with M3 fibers.
