Early reactivity of sodium silicate-activated slag pastes and its impact on rheological properties

M. Palacios et al.

Summary: The rapid loss of fluidity in sodium silicate-activated slag (SS-AAS) systems has been extensively studied. This study correlates the rheology of these cements with the evolution of reaction products over time, finding that initial precipitation of N-A-S-H and C-N-A-S-H products leads to a significant increase in storage modulus. Application of shear force causes structural breakdown and recovery of fluidity, indicating low attractive forces between particles during early hydration stages.

Distinctive rheological and temporal viscoelastic behaviour of alkali-activated fly ash/slag pastes: A comparative study with cement paste

Mohammed Fouad Alnahhal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fundamental differences in viscoelasticity between alkali-activated fly ash/slag materials (AAMs) and cement pastes, showing that the activator viscosity significantly affects the rheological behavior of AAM pastes. The temporal changes in viscoelasticity reveal negligible colloidal interactions between particles in AAM paste until initial setting, resulting in very different viscoelastic behavior compared to well-percolated network in cement paste.
