Improvement of filtration performance of polyvinyl chloride/cellulose acetate blend membrane via acid hydrolysis

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: The filtration performance of a PVC/CA blend membrane was enhanced by using the hydrophilicity and biodegradability of CA, and further improved by partially hydrolyzing CA under acidic conditions. The method maintained the mechanical properties of PVC membrane while increasing the hydrophilicity and porosity of the blend membrane, resulting in enhanced pure water flux and protein rejection rate. This simple preparation method provided the blend membrane with desirable filtration performance and helped overcome the drawbacks of pure PVC membrane.

Tuning the hydraulic permeability and molecular weight cutoff (MWCO) of surface nano-structured ultrafiltration membranes

Yian Chen et al.

Summary: Surface modification with a tethered layer of poly(acrylic acid) allows for tuning the hydraulic permeability and molecular weight cutoff performance of polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane. Adjustment of atmospheric pressure plasma activation and graft polymerization conditions enables effective performance tuning. The synthesis of membranes with a range of hydraulic permeability or molecular weight cutoff for a given parameter overcomes the traditional tradeoff between hydraulic permeability and MWCO.
