Targeting desmosomal adhesion and signalling for intestinal barrier stabilization in inflammatory bowel diseases-Lessons from experimental models and patients

Nicolas Schlegel et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis have a complex pathogenesis, with impaired intestinal barrier function being a key feature closely associated with clinical symptoms. Dsg2, a cadherin-type adhesion molecule of desmosomes, plays a distinct role in IBD pathogenesis by regulating intestinal barrier properties and is a promising target for preventing loss of barrier function in IBD patients.

A host receptor enables type 1 pilus-mediated pathogenesis of Escherichia coli pyelonephritis

Lisa K. McLellan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the crucial role of type 1 pili in establishing ascending pyelonephritis beyond bladder infection in a mouse model. Desmoglein-2 was identified as the first renal FimH receptor, and small-molecule FimH inhibitors showed effectiveness in treating experimental kidney infection.
