Call on me! Undergraduates' perceptions of voluntarily asking and answering questions in front of large-enrollment science classes

Erika M. Nadile et al.

Summary: Allowing students to voluntarily ask and answer questions in large-enrollment college science courses is a common practice, but there is limited research on students' perceptions and participation levels. Most students find it helpful when other students engage in asking and answering questions, but over half of students never participate in this practice, with women more likely than men to never ask questions. Fear of negative evaluation is identified as a primary factor influencing students' decision to answer instructor questions.

Examining Relationships among Contextual, Motivational and Wellbeing Variables of Immigrant Language-Minority College Students

Maryam Saroughi et al.

Summary: The study examined relationships among personal, contextual, and wellbeing variables in 502 Immigrant Language-Minority (ILM) undergraduate students. It found that sense of belonging directly predicted student self-regulation, self-efficacy, positive affect, negative affect, and academic and life satisfaction, while stereotype threat directly predicted self-efficacy and negative affect. Self-efficacy was also shown to mediate the relationship between sense of belonging, stereotype threat, and academic satisfaction, predicting 54% of variance in life satisfaction.
