Summary: This study reviewed the core issues for future research and resolved current research bottlenecks to promote the balance of soil, water, and energy in fragile ecological areas. The integration of above-and below-ground characteristics of vegetation is crucial in explaining rangeland slope erosion and runoff changes. Comprehensive indicators of vegetation at different erosion stages are vital in rangeland erosion research.
