Poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether mediated oxidative scission of aromatic olefins to carbonyl compounds by molecular oxygen

Tao Yu et al.

Summary: A simple and practical method using poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether as a benign solvent has been developed for the oxidative scission of aromatic olefins to carbonyl compounds using O-2 as the sole oxidant. A wide range of aromatic olefins, including monosubstituted, gem-disubstituted, 1,2-disubstituted, trisubstituted, and tetrasubstituted, can be successfully converted into the corresponding aldehydes and ketones in excellent yields, even at a gram-scale reaction. Control experiments were conducted to support a possible reaction pathway.
