The end-Guadalupian (259.8 Ma) biodiversity crisis: the sixth major mass extinction?

Michael R. Rampino et al.

Summary: The modern loss of species diversity is labeled as the 'sixth extinction', following five major mass extinctions recognized in the Phanerozoic geologic record. However, the impact of the end-Guadalupian (end-Capitanian) extinction event is similar to the other major mass extinctions, suggesting there may have been a 'seventh extinction' instead.

Early-Middle Permian strontium isotope stratigraphy of marine carbonates from the northern marginal areas of South China: Controlling factors and implications

Qian Li et al.

Summary: The study reconstructed reliable global chemostratigraphic profiles of carbon and strontium isotopes in the Luduba section, finding a negative correlation between Sr-87/Sr-86 and δC-13 values, indicating that factors such as sea-level change, climatic conditions, opening of the Neo-Tethys Ocean, and accretion of the Pangean Supercontinent contributed to the consistent depletion of Sr-87/Sr-86 values. The study also identified a possible marker for intra- and interbasinal basin stratigraphic correlations based on the rate of decrease in Sr-87/Sr-86 values within different formations.

Strontium isotope evolution of Middle Permian seawater in the Sichuan Basin, South China: Possible causes and implications

Qian Li et al.

Summary: The variations in Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios during the Middle Permian, as recorded in marine carbonates in the Sichuan Basin of China, suggest low values globally, potentially due to weak continental weathering rates, suppressed riverine flux into the ocean during Pangean assembly, and increased hydrothermal flux associated with the opening of the Neotethys. Additionally, strong submarine hydrothermal activity related to the Emeishan Large Igneous Province may have contributed large amounts of non-radiogenic Sr, particularly affecting areas closer to volcanic activity.
