In Situ probing of solid/liquid interfaces of potassium-oxygen batteries via ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy: New reaction pathways and root cause of battery degradation

Wanwan Wang et al.

Summary: Direct probing of metal-oxygen chemistry at the solid/liquid interface is crucial for understanding the reaction mechanism of metal-air batteries. This study, using APXPS, demonstrates in situ probing of potassium oxygen reduction/evolution reaction in ionic liquid-based air batteries, revealing new reaction pathways and root causes of irreversible cell chemistry. The formation and oxidation of K2O2 trigger irreversible cell chemistry, contributing to capacity decay in K-O-2 batteries, and impurities in air such as H2O and CO2 reduce chemical reversibility of ORR and OER.

Porous flexible nitrogen-rich carbon membranes derived from chitosan as free-standing anodes for potassium-ion and sodium-ion batteries

Dong Wang et al.

Summary: Chitosan-derived flexible carbon membranes as binder-free electrodes exhibit excellent performance in various batteries and can be used in flexible batteries. The carbon membranes with porous honeycomb-like structure and high nitrogen doping content can improve ion adsorption and conductivity. Additionally, the reasons for capacity degradation of the carbon membranes under long cycles and different current densities were discussed.

Unraveling the mechanical origin of stable solid electrolyte interphase

Yao Gao et al.

Summary: The capability of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in accommodating deformation is critical to electrode integrity. A new indicator, maximum elastic deformation energy (U), is proposed to predict SEI stability and screen suitable electrolytes for different anodes. The study demonstrates a feasible atomic force microscopy-based nanoindentation test to accurately determine the mechanical parameters of SEI.
