Exploring Factors Associated With Long-Term Opioid Therapy in Cancer Survivors: An Integrative Review

Katie Fitzgerald Jones et al.

Summary: The research analyzed the utilization of long-term opioid therapy (LTOT) and factors associated with persistent opioid use in cancer survivors. It was found that LTOT was common in certain populations of cancer survivors, and was influenced by important biopsychosocial factors such as cancer type, socioeconomic factors, and comorbidities. The study highlighted the need for specialized research on chronic cancer pain and opioid safety in cancer survivors.

Exemptions to state laws regulating opioid prescribing for patients with cancer-related pain: A summary

Hailey W. Bulls et al.

Summary: The study found that most states recognize the importance of prescription opioids in cancer-related pain management while providing exemptions for cancer patients. However, specific guidance for cancer-related pain prescribing is lacking. Drafting nuanced opioid legislation for a diverse population poses challenges and may unintentionally undermine patient-centered approaches to pain management.

Chronic pain severity, impact, and opioid use among patients with cancer: An analysis of biopsychosocial factors using the CHOIR learning health care system

Desiree R. Azizoddin et al.

Summary: In individuals with chronic pain and cancer, psychological factors like sleep disturbance, depression, and pain catastrophizing were found to be significantly associated with pain severity and opioid use. Additionally, poor cancer prognosis and race were also related to opioid use, highlighting the importance of psychological well-being in managing chronic pain.

Association of Dose Tapering With Overdose or Mental Health Crisis Among Patients Prescribed Long-term Opioids

Alicia Agnoli et al.

Summary: Among patients prescribed stable, long-term, higher-dose opioid therapy, tapering events were significantly associated with increased risk of overdose and mental health crisis. The study suggests that reducing opioid doses may lead to negative outcomes such as overdose and mental health crisis.
