Antibiotic usage and resistance in Mexico: an update after a decade of change

Carlos F. Amabile-Cuevas

Summary: Over the past ten years, Mexico has made improvements in regulatory changes and antibiotic usage, but there are still issues with incomplete regulations and usage decline potentially being influenced by other factors. Resistance among certain pathogens has declined, but resistance among community-acquired pathogens like uropathogenic Escherichia coli has increased. Assessment of resistance remains scattered without a coherent picture.

Antibiotic resistance from, and to the environment

Carlos F. Amabile-Cuevas

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a major global public health threat, with many resistance genes originating from the environment and a large number of resistant bacteria and genes being released into the environment due to human activities. The nature and impact of this bidirectional flux are mostly unknown, highlighting the need to assess and understand the role of the environment in antibiotic resistance.
