Socioeconomic factors and outcomes from exercise-related sudden cardiac arrest in high school student-athletes in the USA

Jared Schattenkerk et al.

Summary: This study found that minority student-athletes with exercise-related SCA on high school campuses have lower survival rates than white non-Hispanic athletes, but this difference is not fully explained by SES markers of the school. The presence of an athletic trainer on-site and the use of an on-site AED were associated with higher survival rates.

Evolution of Incidence, Management, and Outcomes Over Time in Sports-Related Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Nicole Karam et al.

Summary: This study assessed the temporal trends in incidence, management, and survival of sports-related sudden cardiac arrest (SrSCA). The results showed that SrSCA incidence remained stable over time, but improvements in on-field resuscitation and public automated external defibrillator use led to a significant increase in survival.

Sports-Related Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Germany

Philipp Bohm et al.

Summary: This study established a registry on sports-related sudden cardiac arrest in order to estimate the incidence and describe the etiologies in Germany. Most cases occurred during nonelite competitive or recreational sports, with premature CAD, SADS, and myocarditis as the leading causes in young athletes, and CAD as the predominant cause in athletes aged 35 and above. The importance of country-specific registries for defining screening and prevention strategies was highlighted.
