Late Holocene sea-surface changes in the North Water polynya reveal freshening of northern Baffin Bay in the 21st century

Kelsey A. Koerner et al.

Summary: The study reveals that over the past 3800 years, the Arctic region has experienced climate-driven changes in sea-surface conditions, with increases in summer sea-surface salinity and temperature, gradual cooling, freshening, increased sea-ice influence, and continued sea-surface cooling. In the last 50 years, there has been a rapid turnover in the composition of dinoflagellate cyst assemblages, unprecedented for the past 3800 years studied.

Glacier changes over the past 144 years at Alexandra Fiord, Ellesmere Island, Canada

Allison N. Curley et al.

Summary: Using aerial photographs, satellite imagery and field observations, this study quantified changes in glaciers in the Alexandra Fiord region of Ellesmere Island. The results showed significant decreases in glacier area, terminus length, snowline elevation, and surface elevation over the past few decades, with accelerated rates of change observed.

Atlantic water inflow to Labrador Sea and its interaction with ice sheet dynamics during the Holocene

Jens Weiser et al.

Summary: The hydrodynamics of the Labrador Sea play a crucial role for the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and understanding its past may hold the key to predicting its future behavior. New research shows that the Atlantic Water inflow into the Labrador Sea during the Holocene is closely linked to the North Atlantic Speed Maximum, indicating a close coupling with the AMOC. The lag between microfossil-based records and the Holocene Speed Maximum can be explained by the presence of a meltwater lens hindering the inflow of Atlantic waters in the early Holocene.

The North Atlantic Glacial Eastern Boundary Current as a Key Driver for Ice-Sheet-AMOC Interactions and Climate Instability

Samuel Toucanne et al.

Summary: The study reveals the important role of the upper branch of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) in ocean circulation and climate change during the glacial period. Fluctuations in the Glacial Eastern Boundary Current (GEBC) during Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) interstadials correspond to variations in subpolar gyre strength and northern-sourced water production, impacting deep water formation and AMOC strength. Ice-sheet-AMOC interactions during the last glacial period and deglaciation are explored, revealing abrupt climate changes.
