Challenges of integrating employment services with mental health services as part of the 'Individual placement and support' approach

Inge Storgaard Bonfils

Summary: One of the main challenges in supporting people with mental health problems in gaining employment is the mismatch between their needs and the services provided. The integration of Individual Placement and Support (IPS) with mental health services can address this challenge. This paper examines the experiences of MH managers in cooperation with IPS employment specialists. The findings highlight the importance of informality and the perception of IPS as a parallel and meaningful service for clients' recovery.

Conflicting mindsets may explain frustrations and distance between traditional rehabilitation paradigms and the IPS approach.
